Forfar Athletic and Edinburgh City will have to do it all again after a goalless draw in the Scottish Cup at Meadowbank.

Both sides had chances to win the game however they will face each other in a replay at Station Park on Tuesday next week for the chance to make it to the third round.

Three changes were made from the derby defeat to Arbroath the previous week with Murray Mackintosh, Martyn Fotheringham and Danny Denholm replacing Michael Kennedy and the midfield duo of Lewis Milne & Thomas O’Brien.

Jamie Bain almost handed Forfar the lead within three minutes with a freak goal; his cross evading everyone before taking a bounce towards goal with Andrew Stobie having to be sharp to palm the ball over the bar.

In the tenth minute Bain came close again with a curling effort but Stobie pushed his shot wide once more.

The defender threatened once more shortly when a corner was nodded away but only as far as the former Airdrie man who struck a dipping volley over the bar.

City’s first clear chance came through Ross Guthrie in the 25th minute with a piercing run through the Forfar defence before his effort was blocked by Stuart Malcolm.

The hosts were reduced to ten men for a spell when Gordon Donaldson was forced off with an injury. He was going to be replaced by Shaun Harrison however he appeared to be wearing the wrong number and after failing to locate his correct shirt, Joe Mbu took his place.

Craig Beattie fluffed a one on one chance with Grant Adam while Jim Lister fired over as the sides went in to half time goalless.

Beattie had a replica of Lister’s first half volley fly inches wide six minutes in to the second half with the former Hearts hit man looking like City’s biggest threat.

He blasted over again shortly before the half hour mark with the Loons going close again through Lister. A lofted ball from Martyn Fotheringham found the attacker whose shot was blocked by Stobie.

Each side seemed to cancel each other out with Beattie and Lister again going close for each side.

Forfar had the better chances late on; David Cox seeing two quick efforts parried by Stobie while Jamie Bain saw his volley from 20 yards clawed away by the acrobatic keeper.

The sides will have their replay next Tuesday, however they battle again in league action this weekend at Station Park.
