Vast experience triumphed over youth at Ainslie Park on Sunday as Paul White’s youthful Forfar Farmington side slumped to a sixteen nil defeat away to Spartans in the Scottish Women’s Premier League.

The visitors were forced to play midfielder Ellice Brannan in goal due to a goalkeeper injury crisis as well as only being able to name two substitutes.

Sarah Ewens opened the scoring after 12 mins, before Amy Gallacher had a chance to equalise with a penalty two minutes later after she was fouled but Rachel Harrison did well to save the spot kick.

Ewens scored twice in two minutes to complete her hat trick halfway through the first half, with Ciara Barnes, Danni Pagliarulo and Ewens again making it six nil at half time.

In the second half Ewens completed a double hat-trick by the 65^th minute making it 8-0 before Kerry Montgomery nabbed a hat-trick for herself between the 69^th and 78^th minute, Sarah Briggs also firing home.

In the final ten minutes Ewens scored a seventh, Pagliarulo, Alana Marshall and Montgomery’s fourth completed the thumping victory for Spartans.

The result leaves Farmington still in eleventh place, with a great chance of some points next week when Inverness City visit Station Park.

Forfar Athletic go into an exciting final day next week after a 4-2 victory at home to Ayr United means they are now three points behind the fourth placed side, defeat next week for Ayr and Stenhousemuir coupled with a Forfar win will give the Loons the final play-off spot.

With Gavin Swankie and Stuart Malcolm both banned, Dick Campbell made three other changes from last week’s defeat to Arbroath, with Chris Duggan, James Dale and Mark Baxter all missed out, with Jamie McCluskey, Marvin Andrews, Omar Kader, Gavin Malin and Ross Campbell coming in.

Forfar scored within the first sixty seconds of the game, Omar Kader ran down the left hand side before cutting the ball into Jamie McCluskey, McCluskey beat the Ayr defence as he advanced into the box before calmly slotting the ball past David Hutton for his second of the season.

Ayr United composed themselves after the goal and went looking for an equaliser, with Michael Donald having a shot blocked before Alan Lithgow headed over in the sixth minute.

Ross Campbell came close to doubling the advantage a quarter of an hour into the match, receiving a through ball from Hilson and then nipping past Gordon Pope but his effort went the other side of the post and hit the sidenetting.

Dale Hilson, in potentially his last game for Forfar, looked dangerous as the Ayr defence struggled to cope with his runs at them, this time beating Lithgow again before seeing his shot saved by Hutton.

In the twenty fifth minute Forfar scored a second, a counter attack after a long range effort from Michael McGowan was saved, Chris Templeman flicked the ball onto Dale Hilson and he ran from the half way line, beating Lithgow before firing home from twenty five yards low into the bottom corner.

Chances after this were few and far between, with Michael Moffat shooting wide in the 30^th minute before Brian Gilmour blasted over on the stroke of half time.

HALF TIME: Forfar Athletic 2 Ayr United 0

The Loons went looking for a third after the break, in the first four minutes an Iain Campbell cross was knocked down to Templeman by Gavin Malin and he volleyed straight at the keeper.

Two minutes later it was three nil, a great pass from McCluskey found Omar Kader and as he raced towards goal the Ayr keeper came out of his goal and slipped, allowing Kader to place his shot in the back of the net.

Forfar had another chance in the 55^th minute, a corner from Campbell was met by Andrews and his header was cleared off the line by Gilmour.

A minute later the Loons had a massive penalty shot when Hilson was bundled over by sub Kyle McAusland as he shaped up to shoot, but the referee gave no penalty.

On the hour mark, Ayr were awarded a penalty of their own, Michael Donald capitalising on an error by Fusco and he went down under pressure by Darren Dods. PFA League One Player of the year nominee Michael Moffat stepped up and put the ball out of reach to add to his impressive goal tally.

McAusland denied Hilson from getting a shot in in the 61^st minute, a long free kick from Campbell was knocked on by Darren Dods and McAusland nipped the ball of Hilson’s feet as he looked to fire home.

Ayr looked to find another goal to open the game up again and went close in quick succession with Pope blasting over before Alan Forrest saw his effort go past the post.

In the 72^nd minute Dale Hilson grabbed his second of the day and 13^th of an excellent season, racing clear of the Ayr defence, rounding David Hutton before lobbing a grounded Alan Lithgow who thought Hilson would shoot before he did.

Hilson had another claim for a penalty in the 77^th minute, Lithgow knocking him over in the box but again the referee said it wasn’t a foul.

Both teams had chances in the space of a minute when there was ten to go, an Iain Campbell error allowed Brian Gilmour in and his shot was blocked by Hill and then cleared. From the corner Martyn Campbell’s header was cleared off the line by Iain and a counter attack ended with Omar Kader setting up Hilson for his hat trick but he blazed his effort over the bar.

In the 83^rd minute sub Mark Shankland set up Craig Malcolm but he fired at Darren Hill. At the other end Chris Duggan was sent clear but he could only send his shot at Hutton and the ball was cleared eventually.

Ayr scored a second deep into injury time, Michael Moffat passing to Gilmour who fired home from outside the box.

This victory means that Forfar are still in the playoff hunt going into the final day despite sitting in sixth. They are three points behind Ayr United and one goal behind on goal difference, Ayr are on minus four with the Loons on minus five, while Stenhousemuir are a point behind Ayr but seven goals worse off on minus eleven.

Forfar Athletic play third placed Stranraer away next week, and the Stair Park outfit could still miss out on the play offs, depending on other results.

3^rd Stranraer: They play Forfar Athletic and a draw will see them into the playoffs regardless of the other results. If they lose and Stenhousemuir and Ayr United win they will not be in the playoffs.

4^th Ayr United: They play East Fife and a win will see them secure a playoff spot. If they were to draw they must hope Stenhousemuir do not win. If they lose and Forfar Athletic or Stenhousemuir win they will miss out on the playoffs.

5^th Stenhousemuir: They play Brechin City and a win along with an Ayr United loss will give them fourth spot. They could also win along with Ayr and grab a playoff spot if Stranraer are defeated. They could draw and still get a playoff place but Ayr United would have to lose by eight goals.

6^th Forfar Athletic: They play Stranraer and anything other than a win coupled with an Ayr United defeat and Stenhousemuir failing to win will mean they miss out on the playoffs.

Ramblings of a Loon’s Player of the Match: Dale Hilson, without a shadow of a doubt, could have had more than two goals and was a menace the whole time he was on.

Forfar Farmington go into this match looking to bounce back from the defeat at Glasgow City last weekend while hosts Spartans haven’t won since the opening day when they defeated Hamilton Academical 2-1.

Farmington visit the excellent Ainslie Park facility still without the services of Keira Johnstone (dislocated knee) and Fiona McNicoll misses out after her facial injury last week, Leonie Simpson will more than likely start in her place. Forfar will also hope to have another couple of players available for the game on Sunday.

Spartans have, as far as I am aware, no injury worries.

Both sides have struggled so far this season, Farmington’s youthful side have won one point in a 2-2 draw with newly promoted Queen’s Park but have been putting in some good performances against experienced sides. Spartans on the other hand, lost out to a late goal last week against Celtic, in the three games before hand they were beaten by Glasgow City 3-1, had a goalless draw with Rangers but won their opening game against Hamilton Academical.

Forfar Athletic slumped to a poor 2-0 defeat to Angus rivals Arbroath this Saturday at Station Park.

Gavin Swankie returned to the starting eleven after missing the midweek defeat to Rangers, Martyn Fotheringham missing out.

The game started off quite evenly, with Ross Chisholm blasting wide after four minutes whilst at the other end, ex-Red Lichtie defender Stuart Malcolm sliced the ball past the post from an Iain Campbell free kick.

Ex-Loon Paul McManus looked dangerous on his return to Station Park, firing into Hill’s arms before seeing another effort going wide, Arbroath starting to control the game. A quarter of an hour into the game, Arbroath came the closest they had to scoring, a poor clearance allowed Alan Cook to get a shot in, Hill pushing the ball wide. From the corner, another Cook effort was chested off the line by Iain Campbell, some Arbroath fans shouting for handball.

Chris Duggan went close when he fired into Scott Morrison, another free kick by Campbell a minute later was met by Malcolm again, who fired over from close range.

Arbroath took the lead in the 23^rd minute, McManus turning defenders in the box before pushing the ball out to player/manager Paul Sheerin who hammered home from the edge of the box.

Just two minutes later, more slack defending allowed the visitors to double their advantage, a cross into the area wasn’t dealt with and Kenny Deuchar blasted home for his second of the season.

After this, chances in the first half were few and far between as Forfar struggled to get back into the game, the only chance coming in the 27^th minute when Darren Dods headed wide from a Campbell corner.

HALF TIME: Forfar Athletic 0 Arbroath 2

The Loons looked to be more in the game after half time, less than a minute after the restart sub Omar Kader’s cross was nodded out by the defence only as far as Gavin Swankie and his half volley was inches wide of the mark.

McManus was still a thorn in the side of his former employers, leading a counter attack that saw him cut inside from the wing, shooting wide.

Forfar players and fans felt they should have had a penalty in the 55^th minute, Gavin Swankie bursting past Ryan McGeever in the box, McGeever looked to have hauled Swankie down but referee Des Roache said no.

Two minutes later Arbroath had a claim of their own, McManus going down inside the box, Roache again saying no, booking Bobby Linn for his protests.

Iain Campbell swung a corner in on the hour mark and the ball bounced around in the box, allowing Dods and Kader half chances but keeper Morrison eventually gathered the ball.

Bobby Linn ran at the shaky defence two minutes later, reaching the byline and he cut the ball back for McManus who looked to have scored but for a great save by Darren Hill.

Yet again McManus had chances to score with twenty minutes to go, first a volley that Hill caught before being set up by Kenny Deuchar, rounding the advancing Hill but his shot hit the sidenetting.

With eight minutes to go, Gavin Malin looked like he was scoring, a shot from outside the box looking goalbound until a defender deflected the ball out for a corner, a minute later he fired wide after being set up by Kader.

Poor defending allowed David Banjo to get an effort in, but the sub’s shot went past the post before Dale Hilson beat two defenders at the other end to get to the byline and he cut the ball back, Morrison gathering before an attacker could get a touch.

In the final minute Gavin Swankie hit the sidenetting, rounding off a poor day for the Loons as their play-off hopes are now almost over, falling six points behind fourth placed Ayr United with six to play for, although they do play the Honest Men at home this coming Saturday.

Forfar Farmington lost 9-0 to SWPL champions Glasgow City, but shouldn’t be ashamed of the scoreline considering they played for 67 minutes with ten players after two players were forced off with injuries at Petershill Park.

Manager Paul White made one change from the defeat against Hamilton last month, with the injured Keira Johnstone replaced by Alex Russell.

City took the lead after four minutes, a cross by Jo Love was met by the head of Denise O’Sullivan from close range, beating Fiona McNicoll.

The home side, filled with internationalists had more chances in the first ten minutes, Leanne Ross, Fiona Brown, O’Sullivan and ex-Farmington winger Abbi Grant all going close, McNicoll doing well to stop the efforts.

Leanne Crichton saw her shot come off the post in the twelfth minute before City doubled their lead in the 17^th minute, a header from a cross was saved by McNicoll but Ross was on hand to stab home the rebound.

It was three nil two minutes later, Love curling home a great effort from the edge of the box. In attempting to save the shot, Forfar keeper McNicoll collided with the frame of the goal and had to be taken to hospital for a head wound, the players being taken off the pitch in the mean time.

After a 35 minute delay, the referee resumed play, with lone sub Leonie Simpson taking McNicoll’s place in goal.

Three minutes after the restart, Brown swung the ball into the box for O’Sullivan, but her header crashed off the bar, Love firing home the second chance.

Farmington were down to ten women in the 23^rd minute, Alex Russell colliding with a home player when challenging for a header, Russell unable to continue after she was given treatment on the sideline.

The visitors had two opportunities to pull a goal back after the half hour mark, Murron White having a shot blocked before Nicola Davidson saw a free kick from twenty five yards fly just over.

City scored a fifth just before half time, Grant’s cross was headed towards goal by Brown and the ball came off Simpson and went into the net, which was harsh on the keeper as she had been performing well since coming on.

HALF TIME: Glasgow City 5 Forfar Farmington 0

The much more experienced home side went looking for a sixth straight away in the second half, Grant and Ross hitting the post and side netting in quick succession, Ross grabbed an assist though, laying off Brown as she fired home for her second of the game.

Brown forced Simpson into a great save in the 57^th minute, Emma Black’s cut back allowing her to get a shot in that Simpson pushed away. Just after the hour mark Eilish McSorley scored City’s seventh, scoring from 30 yards.

Leanne Ross scored her second of the afternoon with fifteen minutes left of the game, swiping home from a Brown cross. Amy Gallacher saw a chance for a consolation blocked while at the other end, several chances for City from Ross, Love, McSorley and Crichton were well saved by Simpson in the last fifteen minutes of the game.

City scored a ninth in the 85^th minute, a cross into the area punched out by Simpson but Abbi Grant was on hand to fire into an empty net.

Forfar Farmington now look to next week, where they take on Edinburgh side Spartans at Ainslie Park. The players shouldn’t be disheartened by the result, they did very well playing against internationalists especially with ten women for over an hour.

Despite stopping them from scoring for over an hour, three late goals from Rangers saw Forfar Athletic lose their fourth and final game against them this season on Tuesday at Ibrox.

From the weekend draw at Dunfermline, Gavin Swankie and Jamie McCluskey dropped out of the squad while Iain Campbell returned from suspension and Omar Kader was promoted from the bench.

Rangers started off with the majority of possession, their first chance coming after just three minutes, Ian Black’s long range effort being tipped over the bar by Darren Hill. From the resultant corner, Jon Daly headed wide.

Nicky Law fired wide from the edge of the box as Rangers started to press more, Forfar defending well.

Near the half hour mark, Jon Daly had two chances in the space of two minutes, hilariously shooting wide after being set up by Nicky Clark and then Arnold Peralta, Daly looking nothing like the player that has scored over twenty goals this season.

He missed yet another opportunity in the 34^th minute, Nicky Law threading a through ball for him this time, yet despite him being one on one with Darren Hill and looking like he would score the opening goal, he sliced his shot.

Between then and half time Rangers had several corners, with not one beating the first man, one of them resulted in a cross by Law being headed over by Clark.

Rangers had a penalty shout on the stroke of half time,  Dean Shiels making his way to the byline and then into the box before falling to the ground as Mark Baxter went for the ball, referee Craig Charleston ruling Shiels to have dived and cautioned him for his theatrics.

It was the Loons turn to have a penalty shout turned down, this time Chris Duggan was bundled over by a sloppy Bilel Mohsni but Craig Charleston said it wasn’t a foul.

Seven minutes into the second half Steven Smith had a 30 yard free kick tipped over by Hill as Rangers enjoyed more of the ball again.

Daly missed yet more easy chances before Forfar looked to have a great chance to take the lead, James Dale sent a ball through the Rangers defence for Chris Duggan but the linesman adjudged him to be offside when Dale sent the ball.

Rangers took the lead after 67 minutes, Richard Foster set up Ian Black who let fly from 25 yards, the ball swerving into the top corner, Darren Hill unlucky not to get to it.

It was two nil seven minutes later, Law’s free kick found Dean Shiels and his cross came off the bar for Mohsni to head home from a yard out.

Substitute Gavin Malin was inches away from scoring with nine minutes left after Ross Campbell’s lay off before Omar Kader danced past the Rangers defenders before forcing Simonsen into a save from his effort.

Rangers scored their third in the final six minutes, Ian Black passed to Fraser Aird, whose cross was nodded home by Dean Shiels.

Forfar Athletic gained a point on fourth place in the battle for the play-offs with their first 0-0 draw in one hundred and eleven games at a windy East End Park this past Saturday against Dunfermline Athletic.

Dick Campbell made three changes from the defeat to East Fife two weeks ago with Gavin Swankie, Darren Dods and Jamie McCluskey all coming in for Martyn Fotheringham, Neil McCabe and Omar Kader.

The Pars started off the better side, with Stephen Husband’s 30 yard effort swerving wide with the wind before Andy Geggan saw his shot fly miles wide.

After 18 minutes, the Loons had their first shot on the game, the ever threatening Dale Hilson shooting from long range but could only put his shot over the bar. Five minutes later Allan Smith should have put Dunfermline ahead, his effort from inside the six yard box hitting the side netting.

 Forfar had another chance sent over the bar in the 25^th minute, Gavin Swankie beating two defenders before blasting over from the edge of the box.

Dunfermline had the best chance of the game so far in the 37^th minute, a Josh Falkingham corner was met by Andy Geggan but the Loons’ James Dale was on hand to hook the ball off the line whereas at the other end, Dale Hilson’s massive run from his own half looked like it had set up Chris Duggan for a great chance but the linesman had deemed Duggan beat the defence too early and was offside.

HALF TIME: Dunfermline Athletic 0 Forfar Athletic 0

As was in the first half, Dunfermline had the first chance of the second half, three minutes in Ryan Thomson did well to get to the byline and send in a low cross, Ryan Williamson could only blast the ball wide.

Mark Baxter set up Dale Hilson four minutes later for another run at the defence that ended with the ball bouncing up as he went to shoot and he sliced the ball wide into the stand.

In the 57^th minute Hilson ran at the defence yet again, beating Lewis Martin on the left as he reached the byline but his cross surprised Omar Kader who didn’t have time to react properly and he somehow headed over from very close range.

A minute later Forfar had hit the bar, a cross from Swankie was met by Duggan and when the ball came back off the crossbar, The Loons forced Ryan Scully into a great double save before the ball was cleared for a corner that came to nothing.

On the hour mark Danny Grainger had an attempt from the edge of the box on target, if the target was the corner flag. Williamson fired wide again from a Whittle cross four minutes later before Swankie forced Scully into a great save, a Hilson corner being cleared out to him and his shot from outside the box dipped and swerved in the wind, Scully having to be at his best to push it away.

With ten minutes to go a Hilson corner was met by Chris Templeman but Duggan couldn’t control the knock down properly and Scully gathered the ball. A minute later Ross Forbes had a free kick 30 yards out but his set piece was too high and landed on the roof of the net.

In the last minute Forfar should have had a penalty, Ross Campbell and Ryan Scully both attempting to get the ball in the box, Scully looked to have taken Campbell out rather than the ball but referee Greg Aitken said it wasn’t a penalty.

The Loons now look to Tuesday where they take on an out of form Rangers, having lost their past two games.
